Winter Trip Day 6 – Muang Ngoi and Nong Khiaw

Muang Ngoi

Since I decided to take a boat departing at 9:30, woke up early and went out to take a walk to a cave.

On the way to the cave, a boy appeared and asked me to follow him. So, I followed him.

Ended up to the river, which was not my destination, but very interesting.

Nong Khiaw

I started hunting for a stay for this night. Aftere visiting two nice bungalows and knowing they were full, I decided to stay this bamboo bungalow. 40,000 kps (5USD). Nice location and river view, but very cold as outside because air flows through bamboo mesh. Even in the room, I could see my breath. And hot water was not really hot and did not run much as other guest houses I stayed in Laos last two days. I cut my big toe by slipped in the shower room and bleeded. It was the toughest night, but this was a travel.

Traditional cook for lunch.

20140101-225447.jpg

Rented a bicycle and biked to Patok Cave. Paid 5,000 kps ($1).

View from the cave.

20140101-225639.jpg

Took a path from the river entrance to the next village.

20140101-225711.jpg

Biked a couple of miles on the mountain road along the river, I found this pretty school in Ban Had Sao village near Nong Khiaw. I was asked to join soccer game, so played with them for a while.

Dinner at Nong Khiaw Riverside restaurant. Fish laab.

Winter Trip Day 5 – Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi

Luang Prabang, Lao PDR

Woke up at 5 to see monks walking and collecting alms.

20140101-221144.jpg

Got Lao style sandwich and Lao coffee on the street.

20140101-222626.jpg

Came back to the guesthouse and waited for the ride, which was supposed to come at 8:30.
A tuktuk finally appeared at 9:30. It took me to the bus terminal, then got on a mini van. The car was full of backpackers going to Nong Kiaw.
It departed at 10. The road condition wasn’t good, but view was beautiful.

Nong Khiaw (Just to make a transit)

We arrived at Nong Kiaw around 1PM. I decided to take a tuktuk to the center of the village since I wanted to reach today’s destination Muang Ngoi before it gets dark.

20140101-221401.jpg

I got a boat ticket which departs at 2PM, and walked around the big bridge with drinking a canned beer.

20140101-221436.jpg

I could get on the boat at 2, but it didn’t start soon. It looked like the pilot needed to get gasoline and fulfill the tank. Then, it started cruising, but stopped soon. He asked all of passengers, which were around 15 or 20 people, to change to another boat. So, we had a transit on the river. It was supposed to be an hour trip, but took two hours to reach Muang Ngoi.
Although it took more time, the trip on the river was awesome. I really enjoyed it.

20140101-221522.jpg

Muang Ngoi

One little street is everything about Muang Ngoi. No cars because there is no road connected to this small village. Only access by boat.

20140101-221609.jpg

When I arrived to Muang Ngoi, I started looking for a stay with a little worry that all guesthouse is full. However, I could find a nice bangarow with river view.
Muang Ngoi basically consists of just one main street. I walked back and forth twice, and got a whole picture.

20140101-221653.jpg

20140101-221732.jpg

20140101-221816.jpg

I decided to get a dinner at the restaurant located at the end of the street.
Now I am writing this blog at the restaurant. It seems no wifi at anywhere in this village, which is great experience for me. I need this thing once in a while…

Much more photos on Facebook…
