After two weeks trip to San Francisco, I started watching American famous TV drama “Lost” in Hulu.jp in my spare time. Then I finished watching all 118 episodes in a couple of weeks!

I really enjoyed the drama and it definitely contributed to have me listen much English language.

Watching TV is much more fun for learning language than listening boring news or something. You cannot find any other way to listen about 90 hours English so intensely.

If you want to improve your foreign language skill, make a girl/boyfriend or watch drama! 🙂

Monthly Target Review in April 2012

Oh, time passes really fast. I haven’t posted April review yet. It’s already May 10, but let me review the last month. Better late than never.

  1. Go to gym 10 times a month – Did not achieve
    • 0 times due to the knee injury
    • Went to rehab 10 times instead
  2. Read 1 book a month – Achieved
  3. Watch 4 movies a month – Achieved

Knee surgery

My knee is recovering gradually. I don’t feel difficulty with everyday’s life if I wear a brace. However, I have to undergo ACL reconstruction surgery as planned originally. It is going to happen in the middle of June. I will be hospitalized for a week and a bit more. It will be the first surgery for me ever. I get often injured, but never broke a bone or underwent a surgery. I am a bit scary of being anesthetized for the surgery…

Hulu offers reasonable price

Hulu, which is on demand streaming service of movies, TV shows, etc, has already been available here in Japan and has reduced price to 980 yen/mo in April. I signed it up and watched a lot of TV dramas with English subtitles. I’ll write about it next review.

Monthly Target Review in March 2012

This is the third time review for my monthly target. Please refer to Jan and Feb in the previous posts. I had a big accident this month March which made me change my plans. I got my right knee injured heavily on March 20, so couldn’t continue going to gym after that. Instead of exercise in gym, I go to a rehab center.

  1. Go to gym 10 times a month – Did not achieve
    • Went to only six or seven times.
    • Need alternative target for this. Under consideration
  2. Read 1 book a month – Achieved
    •  Finished reading “Launch” by Michael A. Stelzner, which is a marketing book published in 2011.
  3. Watch 4 movies a month – Achieved

Monthly Target Review in Feb 2012

I decided a couple of things to achieve every month and declared in this blog a month ago. This is the first review for the monthly target. Drum roll please…

  1. Go to gym 10 times a month – Achieved
    • Went to just 10 times. I was behind the pace, but rushed to go four days in a row last week!
  2. Read 1 book a month – Could not achieve…
    • Red by 64% of “Steve Jobs”, but couldn’t finish it… The book is sold as two books in Japan since it’s very long. Can’t you count 50% as 1 book? 😛
  3. Watch 4 movies a month – Achieved

Movies in June – Super 8

“Super 8” was great. What did you think about it?

This is a really quick post for myself in order to record movies what I saw recently.

On the last day of my stay in SF last week, I had half a day for spare time. The both movies are going to be released in Japan soon, so I didn’t have to see them in SF. However, “Super 8” looked worth seeing at IMAX theater, so I did it. We have some IMAX here in Japan, but there are no convenient locations from my apartment in Tokyo.

In Super 8, kids are main characters and it reminded me a movie “Stand by me”. Hangover II was just for fun.

I could also see a couple of movies in the air:

And I saw this at home today:

By the way, I want to see Australian movies to be used to Australian English. Your recommendations and suggestions are more than welcome.

Movies after the Golden Week in May – Kick Ass and 4 others

Following two movies blogged the other day, I saw five movies at home with big 150″ wall screen which I installed about a month ago. Most of all were good movies and especially I liked Kick Ass. That has tastes of Quentin Tarantino‘s works, it is speedy, exciting, and lots of people killed. If you tell me its his work, I would not doubt it.

When I decide which movies I am going to see recently, I often refer to IMDb score. There are many movie review websites including Japanese one, but IMDb looks like close to my impression and evaluation. When I thought great movie, the score in IMDb is usually good like 7.5+.  So, I was able to enjoy five movies thanks to IMDb.

I stopped giving score for movies I saw, because it is just difficult. A movie is great, affecting, might make you cry, but seeing once is enough. Another one is not so great as other one, but makes you want to see it again. How can you tell which one is better than another? And my scores flock around 8.0 and there are not much difference among them. They are not useful any more.

Among the above five, I would recommend Kick-Ass and Gran Trino, maybe The Bucket List. When you want to laugh, Due Date is for you. The Last Station isn’t that bad. If you have enough time like me, see all of them. 😛

Movies in “Golden Week”: Somersault and The Joneses

If you are familiar with Japanese calendar, you must know Golden Week, which is long holiday every Spring. They have four public holidays between April 29th and May 5th. When the holidays luckily do not overlap weekend, it could be long holiday. This year lots of people enjoy 10 consecutive holiday and today is right in the midst of it. I work on May 2nd, Monday and 6th, Friday. Also I have a couple of conference calls on 4th and 5th. However it is long enough to be relaxed and enjoy days off.

As I partly wrote in the previous post, I rented a number of DVDs before entering the holidays. Two movies were picked up and seen last few days at home.

Somersault (2004)

I think this is an educational movie for young women by showing the bad example of avoiding feeling loneliness. It reminded me another educational movie “An Education” which I saw in December 2009. If you have a teenage girl, this movie could be good. (but not for me) By the way, Australian movie is always hard to understand for me due to the English accent as well as British one.

The Joneses (2009)

This was interesting because I learned some hints for being good sales person from them although it was not the theme of the movie. They do not sell products, but life style which ordinary people envy. The father had practice of speaking in front of a mirror to make sure how he looks like from others. There are tips for everything and you need to practice for doing good at it.

(Sorry for my useless review of this movie…)
